<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/a>Richard Lin\u00adklater\u2019s Dazed and Con\u00adfused<\/em> (1993) has an endur\u00ading pop\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adi\u00adty. It was an ensem\u00adble piece, focus\u00ading on a dozen char\u00adac\u00adters, all young, unknown actors at the time. Ben Affleck, among them, went on to a major film career. But when\u00adev\u00ader I dis\u00adcuss the film with any\u00adone, they always fix on one per\u00adfor\u00admance, that of Wiley Wig\u00adgins, who played an amaz\u00ading\u00adly lik\u00adable char\u00adac\u00adter that saved the film from being too pat\u00adly cyn\u00adi\u00adcal. Lin\u00adklater wise\u00adly employed Wig\u00adgins again to play the cen\u00adtral char\u00adac\u00adter in Wak\u00ading Life<\/em>. This off\u00adbeat 2001 film employs a com\u00adbi\u00adna\u00adtion of roto\u00adscope and com\u00adput\u00ader ani\u00adma\u00adtion. Roto\u00adscop\u00ading is a tech\u00adnique that is usu\u00adal\u00adly annoy\u00ading, but here it works per\u00adfect\u00adly to put across the idea of lucid dream\u00ading. The sto\u00adry line involves a char\u00adac\u00adter who is trapped in a dream about being trapped in a dream, and sus\u00adpi\u00adcious that he is actu\u00adal\u00adly dead. He con\u00adstant\u00adly encoun\u00adters char\u00adac\u00adters who lec\u00adture him on var\u00adi\u00adous con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal philo\u00adsoph\u00adi\u00adcal notions \u2015 the stan\u00addard reper\u00adtoire of Exis\u00adten\u00adtial\u00adism, Post\u00admod\u00adernism, etc, the kind of stuff that usu\u00adal\u00adly makes me cringe. But the warmth of Wig\u00adgins\u2019 per\u00adson\u00adal\u00adi\u00adty (his char\u00adac\u00adter is nev\u00ader named) makes it all work, and the ani\u00adma\u00adtion\u2019s shift\u00ading styles and visu\u00adal jokes are per\u00adfect for por\u00adtray\u00ading dream states. Some of the seg\u00adments are quite beautiful.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
