\"Jimmy-Cliff-Net-Worth\"<\/a>My old friend Peter Svi\u00adlans gave me a cd col\u00adlec\u00adtion of Jim\u00admy Cliff. Cliff was my first taste of Reg\u00adgae. His appear\u00adance in the 1972 Jamaican film The Hard\u00ader They Come<\/em>, still sticks in my mind. I saw it at a rep-house show\u00ading in Petaluma, Cal\u00adi\u00adfor\u00adnia, with my friend Simon Agree. Cliff played the lead char\u00adac\u00adter, and some of his best songs were played on the sound\u00adtrack: \u201cYou Can Get It If You Real\u00adly Want\u201d, \u201cMany Rivers To Cross\u201d, \u201cThe Hard\u00ader They Come\u201d, \u201cSit\u00adting Here In Lim\u00adbo\u201d. The first two of those are in the Tro\u00adjan CD<\/span> col\u00adlec\u00adtion, and twen\u00adty-three oth\u00ader songs of uni\u00adformly high qual\u00adity. Jim\u00admy Cliff was even\u00adtu\u00adally eclipsed in the pub\u00adlic mind by Bob Mar\u00adley, and that man\u2019s genius is unde\u00adni\u00adable. But Jimmy\u2019s music had a jaun\u00adty, inno\u00adcent charm to it, and he should not be neglect\u00aded in anyone\u2019s col\u00adlec\u00adtion. In his day, Reg\u00adgae was still Island music, a down-home kind of thing. Mar\u00adley made it cos\u00admopoli\u00adtan, uni\u00adver\u00adsal. But Cliff, too, some\u00adtimes touched uni\u00adver\u00adsal chords. Who is there, who has ever had to trudge through the weary ups and downs of life, who won\u2019t respond to \u201cMany Rivers to Cross\u201d, the kind of song best heard late at night, strand\u00aded in a donut shop on a high\u00adway you nev\u00ader planned to drive.<\/span><\/p>\n
