Among these dis\u00adtinc\u00adtions was their fond\u00adness, over sev\u00aderal cen\u00adturies, for z<em>arzuela<\/em>, an alter\u00adna\u00adtive to Opera, with its own styles and con\u00adven\u00adtions. While zarzue\u00adlas were staged as ear\u00adly as the mid-sev\u00aden\u00ad\u00adteenth cen\u00adtury, they reached their apogee of pop\u00adu\u00adlar\u00adity and artis\u00adtic glo\u00adry in the ear\u00adly 20th cen\u00adtury, and were still going strong decades after opera had ceased to be broad\u00adly pop\u00adu\u00adlar. There are dis\u00adtinc\u00adtive styles of zarzuela sung in Cata\u00adlan (<em>sar\u00adsuela<\/em>) and in Basque (<em>zartzue\u00adlak<\/em>). The <em>roman\u00adzas<\/em> of this kind of music-dra\u00adma are the equiv\u00ada\u00adlent of opera\u2019s arias.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.philpaine.com\/?attachment_id=8527\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8527\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-8527\" src=\"http:\/\/www.philpaine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/05\/08-05-11-LISTN-The-Alternate-World-of-Zarzuela.jpg\" alt=\"08-05-11 LISTN The Alternate World of Zarzuela\" width=\"586\" height=\"327\"><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><!--more--><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span id=\"more-876\"><\/span>Rolan\u00addo Vil\u00adlaz\u00f3n, an oper\u00adatic tenor who is cur\u00adrently in great demand, is very much at home in this vari\u00adant tra\u00addi\u00adtion. With his mighty tenor col\u00adleague and com\u00adpa\u00adtriot, Place\u00addo Domin\u00adgo, hold\u00ading the baton of the Orques\u00adtra de la Comu\u00adnidad de Madrid, Vil\u00adlaz\u00f3n pro\u00adduced a fine selec\u00adtion of roman\u00adzas for Vir\u00adgin Clas\u00adsics, under the title <em>Gitano<\/em>, released in 2007. The selec\u00adtions are rep\u00adre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adtive of the lat\u00ader phas\u00ades of zarzuela com\u00adpos\u00adti\u00adtion, and include works by Jos\u00e9 Ser\u00adrano, Fed\u00ader\u00adrico Moreno Tor\u00adrob\u00e1 (who is bet\u00adter known out\u00adside Spain for his gui\u00adtar com\u00adpo\u00adsi\u00adtions), Jac\u00adinto Guer\u00adrero, Pablo Soroz\u00e1bal, Amadu Vives, Pablo Luna, Augustin P\u00e9rez Sori\u00adano, Jos\u00e9 Maria Cano, Reve\u00adri\u00adano Soutul\u00adlo and Juan&nbsp;Vert.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In their casu\u00adal charm, these \u201carias\u201d are clos\u00ader in feel\u00ading to Broad\u00adway solos than to the thun\u00adder\u00adous shout\u00ading match\u00ades of Ital\u00adian opera. Some of them would not feel out of place in <em>Okla\u00adhoma<\/em> or S<em>even Brides for Sev\u00aden Broth\u00aders<\/em>. I would not be sur\u00adprised if some of the clas\u00adsics of the genre could be suc\u00adcess\u00adfully filmed, and reach out to a world audi\u00adence. Bet\u00adter yet, this art form, which fell into decline dur\u00ading Franco\u2019s dic\u00adta\u00adtor\u00adship, could be adapt\u00aded to the wealth and dynamism of mod\u00adern Spain and Cat\u00adalo\u00adnia, through entire\u00adly new works. Zarzue\u00adlas always incor\u00adpo\u00adrated cur\u00adrently pop\u00adu\u00adlar song.
