Lequin\u2019s <em>Earth\u00adsea<\/em> books are wide\u00adly admired. Cer\u00adtainly, the first vol\u00adume starts off well. The fan\u00adtasy world is well-con\u00adstruct\u00aded, with the geog\u00adra\u00adphy metic\u00adu\u00adlously thought out. Things move along quick\u00adly, because the prose style is <em>very <\/em>lean, with only the odd bit of con\u00adcrete, sen\u00adsory descrip\u00adtion thrown in judi\u00adciously. I would nev\u00ader right that \u201cthin\u201d a prose myself, but LeGuin seems to be able to get away with it. The main char\u00adac\u00adter, Ged, is a bit of a stick of wood. I found myself pic\u00adtur\u00ading him as Wes\u00adley Crush\u00ader dressed up in a wiz\u00adard cloak. The drag\u00adon is the best char\u00adac\u00adter. The sec\u00adond book was unfo\u00adcused, the third was a good read, but recy\u00adcled the themes of the first, and the fourth, writ\u00adten a full twen\u00adty-two years after the first, was down\u00adright bor\u00ading.&nbsp;There was a fifth, pub\u00adlished in 2001, which I haven\u2019t even looked for.&nbsp;I would have to say that only the first vol\u00adume real\u00adly inspired me, and that it sup\u00adplied all that I need\u00aded from the series.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I decid\u00aded to read through the well-known series of juve\u00adnile fan\u00adtasy that I nev\u00ader got around to read\u00ading.
