They are the acknowl\u00adedged mas\u00adters. All of Spain\u2019s ear\u00adly musi\u00adcal tra\u00addi\u00adtions fall under their gaze, and among them is the genre known as \u201carabo-andalouse\u201d, which flour\u00adished under Mus\u00adlim rule in Spain, among Mus\u00adlim, Chris\u00adt\u00adian, and Jew\u00adish musi\u00adcians alike. Atri\u00adum Musi\u00adcae de Madrid, one of the family\u2019s ensem\u00adbles, has pro\u00adduced a fine intro\u00adduc\u00adtion to the instru\u00admen\u00adtal side of the this tra\u00addi\u00adtion in their album <em>Musique Arabo-Andalouse<\/em>.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The basic frame\u00adwork of this music orig\u00adi\u00adnated with the com\u00adpos\u00ader-sci\u00aden\u00adtist Abu Al-Has\u00adsan Ali ben Nafi, bet\u00adter known as Ziryab, an immi\u00adgrant to Cor\u00addoba from Bagh\u00addad. He intro\u00adduced the <em>oud<\/em> to Spain, adding a fifth string to the instru\u00adment, and devel\u00adoped a style empha\u00adsiz\u00ading the plec\u00adtrum. Ziryab was said to have been an African slave from Tan\u00adza\u00adnia, who became a musi\u00adcal \u201cstar\u201d at the age of twelve, famous through\u00adout the Abbasid Caliphate. The Caliph, his own\u00ader, became bit\u00adterly jeal\u00adous of his fame, and threat\u00adened him with exe\u00adcu\u00adtion, but he fled to Cor\u00addoba. By this time, his intel\u00adli\u00adgence and court\u00adly man\u00adners had made him a cul\u00adtural asset in the remote west\u00adern part of Islam, and he is said to have intro\u00adduced Bagh\u00addadi fash\u00adions, chess, and polo to Spain. He was also an accom\u00adplished geo\u00adg\u00adra\u00adpher and astronomer. Locked in his prodi\u00adgious mem\u00adory where thou\u00adsands of songs from Africa, Per\u00adsia, and Iraq, and to these he added every\u00adthing he could soak up from the Chris\u00adt\u00adian and Jew\u00adish music of Spain, and the Berber music of North Africa. In the musi\u00adcal acad\u00ademy he found\u00aded in Cor\u00addoba, he sys\u00adtem\u00adatized these ele\u00adments into strict forms, based on a cycli\u00adcal pro\u00adce\u00addure sim\u00adi\u00adlar to that employed in the ragas of India. Ziryab was, by all the evi\u00addence, one of the great musi\u00adcal minds of history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">From Ziryab\u2019s acad\u00ademy, the sys\u00adtem spread across the west\u00adern Islam\u00adic world, and sur\u00advived the <em>Recon\u00adquista<\/em> of Spain in the Mor\u00adrocco, Alge\u00adria and Tunisia, into mod\u00adern times. But there were many inno\u00adva\u00adtions, over the cen\u00adturies. Atri\u00adum Musicae\u2019s recon\u00adstruc\u00adtion gives you an idea of the ear\u00adli\u00adest, Span\u00adish phase. Much of Europe\u2019s music grew out of this tra\u00addi\u00adtion.
