But the book is use\u00adful back\u00adground for the kind of issues that inter\u00adest me, as well as being enter\u00adtain\u00adingly writ\u00adten. The book doesn\u2019t have the sanc\u00adti\u00admo\u00adnious tone that ham\u00adpers much that is writ\u00adten on the sub\u00adject. King\u00adsolver knows that real fam\u00adi\u00adlies have to make eco\u00adnomic choic\u00ades under the con\u00adstraint of shrink\u00ading finan\u00adcial resources, and prac\u00adti\u00adcal real\u00adity.
