This work brings me up to date on the cur\u00adrent state of evi\u00addence and the\u00adory con\u00adcern\u00ading the tran\u00adsi\u00adtion to agri\u00adcul\u00adture. Graeme Bark\u00ader sum\u00adma\u00adrizes many reports that I haven\u2019t seen, includ\u00ading for\u00adeign lan\u00adguage ones that I couldn\u2019t have. On the whole, it is grat\u00adi\u00adfy\u00ading to me, as it shows that both the weight of evi\u00addence and the weight of opin\u00adion have been grad\u00adu\u00adally shift\u00ading towards my own views. The genet\u00adic, pale\u00adob\u00adotan\u00adi\u00adcal, and pale\u00adoiso\u00adtopic evi\u00addence is all push\u00ading it in that direc\u00adtion. I\u2019m hap\u00adpy to see that fish\u00ading is now accord\u00aded the promi\u00adnent posi\u00adtion that it deserves. In the long run, I think that fur\u00adther evi\u00addence will force the pro\u00adfes\u00adsion\u00adals to make the \u201cleap\u201d that I feel is nec\u00ades\u00adsary. Cur\u00adrently, pre\u00adhis\u00adtoric trade net\u00adworks, while rec\u00adog\u00adnized, are still seen as inci\u00adden\u00adtal, or irrel\u00ade\u00advant to the tran\u00adsi\u00adtion. A few the\u00ado\u00adrists posit that they play a role in fos\u00adter\u00ading elites and seden\u00adtarism \u2015 with the assump\u00adtion that acqui\u00adsi\u00adtion of \u201cpres\u00adtige goods\u201d was the essence of such trade. I believe, on the oth\u00ader hand, that the process of sub\u00adstitut\u00ading goods for\u00admerly import\u00aded through this trade sys\u00adtem by local pro\u00adduc\u00adtion, is the heart of the mat\u00adter. Pre\u00adhis\u00adtoric trade, I think we will dis\u00adcover, was over\u00adwhelm\u00adingly con\u00adcerned with food sta\u00adples, wide\u00adly used prod\u00aducts, and \u201cmass mar\u00adket\u201d tech\u00adnol\u00adogy, with \u201cpres\u00adtige goods\u201d mere\u00adly a side-effect. The spread of agri\u00adcul\u00adture was mere\u00adly one aspect of an ongo\u00ading macro-eco\u00adnom\u00adic process that has its roots in the ear\u00adly devel\u00adop\u00adment of homo-sapi\u00adens, and not a dis\u00adrup\u00adtion of a sta\u00adtic or \u201cnon-eco\u00adnom\u00adic\u201d pre-agri\u00adcul\u00adtur\u00adal soci\u00adety, com\u00ading out of the blue. None of the pre\u00advail\u00ading \u201cpush\u201d or \u201cpull\u201d visu\u00adal\u00adiza\u00adtions of the adop\u00adtion of agri\u00adcul\u00adture rec\u00adog\u00adnize the impor\u00adtance of this process. The archae\u00ado\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal evi\u00addence, espe\u00adcially in north\u00adern Europe, screams out to be inter\u00adpreted in this way. It will mere\u00adly take a small con\u00adcep\u00adtual shift to make it hap\u00adpen. I would real\u00adly love to sit down with some of the peo\u00adple who are close<\/em> to mak\u00ading the leap, and argue them into it.<\/span><\/p>\n
