The duduk is a nine-holed oboe made of apri\u00adcot wood, some\u00adwhat resem\u00adbling the medieval Euro\u00adpean shawm, and Gas\u00adparyan is its unri\u00advaled mas\u00adter. Alizadeh is the younger dynamo of the Per\u00adsian lute. How\u00adev\u00ader, for this amaz\u00ading per\u00adfor\u00admance record\u00aded in Tehran in Sep\u00adtem\u00adber of 2003, Alizadeh employed a vari\u00adant form of the tar known as the <em>shu\u00adran\u00adgiz<\/em>. The con\u00adcert alter\u00adnat\u00aded Armen\u00adian and Per\u00adsian songs, and includ\u00aded Alizadeh\u2019s famil\u00adiar orches\u00adtra, and three vocal\u00adists \u2014 one female, some\u00adthing con\u00adsid\u00adered a bit dar\u00ading in con\u00adtem\u00adpo\u00adrary, mul\u00adlah-infest\u00aded Iran. Iran and the Unit\u00aded States share a com\u00admon afflic\u00adtion: both are nations with a deep and mul\u00adti\u00adfac\u00adeted musi\u00adcal her\u00aditage, and an innate vital\u00adi\u00adty of pop\u00adu\u00adlar cul\u00adture, which have the mis\u00adfor\u00adtune of being ruled by wicked, igno\u00adrant, stu\u00adpid old men, and tor\u00adment\u00aded by moron\u00adic reli\u00adgious zealots. Yet the under\u00adly\u00ading vital\u00adi\u00adty and beau\u00adty always seems to sur\u00advive.
