It attract\u00aded me because I could\u00adn\u2019t fig\u00adure out, for the life of me, what the hell it was about. It took me hours to find the painter and title. I first found the <em>Pal\u00adlas <\/em>ver\u00adsion of the title. I could find no ref\u00ader\u00adence any\u00adwhere in Greek mythol\u00ado\u00adgy to this par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar inci\u00addent, but it is clear\u00adly Pal\u00adlas Athena, bear\u00ading all her sym\u00adbol\u00adic para\u00adpher\u00adna\u00adlia, who is the main char\u00adac\u00adter. There are a plen\u00adi\u00adtude of tales around Athena.&nbsp;How\u00adev\u00ader, the <em>Min\u00ader\u00adva<\/em> ver\u00adsion of the title pro\u00advides a hint:&nbsp;Min\u00ader\u00adva was the Roman god\u00addess con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adly equat\u00aded with Athena, and the sto\u00adry is prob\u00ada\u00adbly a Roman one dat\u00ading from much lat\u00ader.&nbsp;Man\u00adteg\u00adna would far more like\u00adly have culled the sto\u00adry from some Latin source.&nbsp;On the oth\u00ader hand, he may have sim\u00adply made it up.&nbsp;The Renais\u00adsance played fast and loose with Clas\u00adsi\u00adcal sources, and doubt\u00adless this was paint\u00aded to suit polit\u00adi\u00adcal rhetoric about \u201cdrain\u00ading the swamp\u201d.&nbsp;The paint\u00ading lit\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly rep\u00adre\u00adsents a swamp enclosed in a ruined wall, with Athena dri\u00adving out a horde of mon\u00adsters that rep\u00adre\u00adsent the \u201cvices\u201d in the con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal medieval fash\u00adion.
