Jean Leloup

08-03-03 LISTN Jean LeloupI’m listening again, with pleasure, to L’amour est sans pitié, a 1990 album by the interesting Canadian rocker Jean Leloup. Leloup (“The Wolf”) is a stage name for Jean LeClerc, who was born in Quebec, but spent his childhood in Togo and Algeria, returning home at age fifteen. After an apprenticeship in the Quebec rock scene, he briefly found some national and international success with this album, which has songs in both French and English. He combined rock with rai elements long before anyone else was doing this in North America, and his lyrics are clever. I’m told that a subsequent album, Le Dôme, which was not as widely distributed, is even better. I haven’t found a copy yet. I understand that he subsequently published a philosophical novel called Noir destin que le mien, which I haven’t seen.

(Green & Siegel 2003) The Weather Underground

I’m far too irritated by this silly documentary to analyze it dispassionately. It foolishly romanticizes the Weather Underground. Those pompous, arrogant assholes were typical examples of spoiled-brat rich kids aligning themselves with evil and masquerading as “opponents” of the Vietnam War. These were NOT radicals in any sense. Their ideology was ultra-orthodox, ultra-conservative, pro-slavery, and totalitarian. Today, partly because of the activities of these fake “revolutionaries”, the truly evil nature of the Vietnam War has been successfully obfuscated by its perpetrators. These clowns were NOT the opposition to that evil war. Far from it. As the sixties saying went, you are either part of the problem or you’re part of the solution. Hypocritical poseurs like the Weathermen were part of the problem. They should be firmly classified where they belong: symbiotic partners with the monsters who promoted and executed the Vietnam War. Meanwhile, all the courage of the genuine opponents of the war has been forgotten. Let us hear no more nonsense about these phony creeps.

SECOND MEDITATION ON DICTATORSHIP (written March 1, 2008)

The argument behind this series of meditations is that aristocratic elites, whether they are dressed up in military uniforms, business suits, or the regalia of royalty, are identical in purpose and function. Differences between them are trivial and cosmetic, not structural. The term “dictatorship” applies equally to all places where an unelected gang of hoodlums rules over people and territory, whatever their supposed ideology or whatever style they chose to prance around in. I further contend that they are neither morally legitimate, nor “government” in the sense that democratically elected administrations are. Dictators are merely criminals, no different from the criminals that rob convenience stores or attack women in darkened car parks. The only difference is the amount of money they steal and the number of people they murder or maim.
